Maryland Legislative Districts and NPAM Legislative Committee

Maryland has 47 Legislative Districts which are equal in population and are redrawn every ten years.  Each Legislative District elects one Senator and three Delegates to the Maryland General Assembly.  They are all up for election every four years. To find your Legislative District go to www.mdelect.net

NPAM has a strong legislative committee which monitors NP practice issues dictated by state law (statute, developed through legislation) and regulations (Code of Maryland Regulations-COMAR). The legislative committee is made up of members from all over Maryland to try to represent many of the 47 legislative districts and all of the NPAM geographic districts. The committee meets in person or by conference call to discuss issues; develop a legislative agenda; work with NPAM lobbyists to develop legislation; and promote the legislation to our members, legislators, and the public. The committee also reviews health-related bills introduced in the legislature by other groups, and makes recommendations to NPAM about support or opposition. NPAM lobbyists act as eyes and ears for NPAM through their presence in Annapolis, especially in the health committee hearings during the legislative session.

The NPAM legislative chair is a strong leader for the legislative committee and a tremendous advocate for all NPs in Maryland. The chair works side by side with our lobbyists to assess legislative and regulatory issues that impact NP practice, develop a plan, educate legislators, and try to enact changes as needed. The legislative chair also builds relationships with other health care stakeholders representing nursing, medicine, education, the government, business, and the community. The legislative chair represents NPAM in working with other groups toward similar goals and to gain support for our own legislative agenda.
