Spotlight on a Member:  Cathy Chapman

Cathy Chapman, CRNP, owner of Chapman and Associates Health Care in Cumberland, Maryland has been selected to receive the 2015 Outstanding Rural Health Practitioner Award from the Maryland Rural Health Association at an awards ceremony on October 28, 2015 in Ocean City, Maryland.

A nurse since 1979 and a Nurse Practitioner since 1995, Chapmanā€™s nursing experience includes acute care nursing, home health, hospice, and sexual assault forensic nurse examiner. As a Nurse Practitioner, she is certified as an adult and family primary care Nurse Practitioner as well as a family psychiatric-mental health Nurse Practitioner and nurse therapist.

Chapman is an active member of the Nurse Practitioner Association of Maryland (NPAM), the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), and the Western Maryland Nurse Practitioner Caucus, of which she is a founding member. She is the Western District Director for NPAM, a member of the NPAM Political Action Committee (PAC), and a member of the NPAM Legislative Committee. In 2008, and again in 2014 she was recognized as the Maryland Nurse Practitioner of the Year by the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP). Chapman serves on the Board of Directors of Allegany Health Right and is active as a parish nurse at her church. The author of several publications in peer-reviewed journals, Cathy also finds time to precept nursing and Nurse Practitioner students.

Ms. Chapman is the sole proprietor of Chapman and Associates Health Care located in Cumberland, Maryland, in Allegany County, serving the health care needs of her community in rural Maryland. As a primary care and mental health Nurse Practitioner, Cathy provides comprehensive, holistic care to her patients. Over 40% of the patients seen in her practice are low income patients and are covered by Medical Assistance. She works closely with the local health care agencies and other health professionals to ensure a high level of care for all of her patients, insured and uninsured.

Additionally, Cathy has been involved with medical mission work since 1997, leading 16 medical brigades to Honduras in Central America to work with malnourished children and provide health care to those living in the rural mountain communities.
